Description
In 1977 Delhi Township and the Holt Public Schools entered into a cooperative agreement to provide recreational services to our residents. It was agreed to share the public grounds and facilities that each controlled for public recreation programs such as football, baseball and soccer. The agreement initially stipulated that there be no charge for servicing these facilities, since both entities received non-monetary value from them being better maintained.
Allowed for a broader range of participation.
Community residents had more open spaces for recreation
Students and children had better fields to play on
Overall, a better "Community" atmosphere
The school district did not have enough grounds workers to keep up with so many acres of land, so they were forced to cut after hours or on weekends, (overtime) and only after the grass was so long it was generating citizen complaints. Even after the grass was cut there were citizen complaints because the after-cut looked like a hay field. The fields were almost unusable in either condition.
In 2001, the township and school district expanded the agreement to almost 60 acres. Under the agreement the township is now being reimbursed for the service cost. The township is able to utilize part-time help, saving the district the cost of full-time employees at overtime rates ($10 vs. $30 perhour).
This is also a great opportunity for the young adults in the community as it provides an employment opportunity during the summer vacation period.
The school district pays the township $9,000 annually, but saves about $18,000 annually
This covers the cost of the seasonal employees and equipment depreciation for the township
The undertone in this agreement is that it
allows the Holt School District to do what they do best
,
to be educators
; and
allows the township parks department to do what they do best
,
be landscapers
.
The real winner is the community as a whole. The properties have better curb appeal, and the residents; their families and children, all have better facilities at their disposal.
