Description
The Macomb Auto Theft Squad (MATS) is a team made up of officers from Clinton Twp, Eastpointe, Michigan State Police, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, and Warren who focus on solving car theft and related crimes in Macomb County.
In 2000 MATS joined with the Blue Water Auto Theft Team and now provides investigative support to all police agencies in the counties of Macomb, Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, St. Clair and Tuscola. MATS is funded by the Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA). ATPA is funded by an annual $1 assessment on each insured non-commercial passenger vehicle. Since the inception of ATPA, auto thefts in Michigan have dropped by 25% (the national average is 6%). MATS is beneficial to all citizens of the involved counties. Because it is a joint effort, information is gathered from multiple sources and the participants are happy with the outcomes.
